Stakkholtsgjá is a stunning and increasingly popular canyon of the Stakkholtsá River, featuring a hidden waterfall at its end. The canyon is quite wide at its mouth, and its more than 100-meter-high rock walls give it a truly monumental appearance.
To reach the as-yet-unnamed waterfall, you need to wade or hop across the river and continue through the narrow gorge. The waterfall isn’t visible at first, but rest assured, it will be waiting for you.
Stakkholtsgjá Canyon is located on the F249 road that leads to þórsmörk, requiring the crossing of several glacial rivers.
It is one of the locations where the Game of Thrones series was filmed.
