Eldfell (Mountain of Fire) is a crater that was formed as a result of a very unexpected eruption that began on January 23, 1973.
The eruption and the subsequent lava flow increased the size of Heimaey Island by 2.4 km².
If you want to learn more about Eldfell, the eruption, and the period that followed, visit the Eldheimar Museum, which is dedicated to the eruption and everything that followed.
Most of the residents of Heimaey Island, as well as many other Icelanders, still divide their lives into the periods before and after the eruption.
You can find Eldfell on Heimaey Island, and you can easily reach the crater from the harbor within an hour.
