Hvannárgil is a stunning canyon in the Þórsmörk area, through which the Hvanná River wildly carves its path, challenging both drivers and hikers who cross it. Hvannárgil serves as an alternative side route to the Fimmvörðuháls trek, taking you from the Þórsmörk area almost to the upper plains between the glaciers Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull.
In the lower part of the canyon, there are several spots that are quite close to the cliff edge. Be mindful of where and how you step.
Hvannárgil also offers a beautiful option for a one-day trek. You can either hike up the canyon and then return the same way, or ascend to the mountains via the Fimmvörðuháls route and return through Hvannárgil to the Básar area. However, be aware that in the lower part of Hvannárgil, the path runs very close to the edge of the canyon.
