Hengifoss is one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland (128 meters) and, due to its interesting rock structure in the background, certainly the most beautiful and fascinating waterfall in eastern Iceland.
You can find Hengifoss 35 kilometers southwest of the town of Egilsstaðir. After arriving at the parking lot (which has restrooms), you will need to walk for almost an hour to reach Hengifoss and see it in all its glory. The hike is not particularly difficult, but you will be going uphill along the river. On the way, you will also pass another Icelandic waterfall, the 30-meter tall Litlanesfoss.
