Stuðlagil

The picturesque canyon in the eastern part of Iceland, Stuðlagil, is flanked by majestic basalt columns on both banks of the Jökulsá á Brú river. You can enjoy the canyon from both sides of the river, though the experience from the eastern side is certainly superior.

Stuðlagil Canyon is just a few dozen meters from Route 923 in eastern Iceland. If you’re content with viewing the canyon from the western side, simply park at the designated parking area and walk a few dozen meters down. Currently, there is a metal staircase and a viewing platform already in place.

If you wish to see the canyon from the eastern side, drive about 4 kilometers north, park in the nearby village, cross the bridge, and walk back upstream from the parking area. You’ll reach the canyon in about an hour.

From this side, the encounter with the canyon is immediate and intense. You can descend right to the river and become part of the entire stunning scenery.
