Skógafoss – the forest waterfall. How many fewer people would know about Iceland if it weren’t for this waterfall? Tourists, wedding parties, models, selfie enthusiasts – it seems everyone wants to have this waterfall in their photos. And it’s no wonder. Standing 60 meters tall and 20 meters wide, with an almost perfectly rectangular shape, it’s a sight to behold. Like many Icelandic waterfalls, it often displays a rainbow, but Skógafoss offers something special: a double rainbow is more common here than a single one.
This is also the starting point for the Fimmvörðuháls trek, which connects Skógar and Þórsmörk. If that’s not enough for you and you want to go further, you can seamlessly continue onto the famous Laugavegur trek, which takes you all the way to Landmannalaugar.
If you crave Icelandic beauty but are slightly put off by the crowds, you can take a walk to the nearby Kvernufoss waterfall.
They say all roads lead to Rome. In Iceland, all roads seem to lead to Skógafoss. You can see it right from the Ring Road, and you really can’t miss it.
