Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is one of the most popular and stunning thermal spring regions in Iceland, hence its name, which translates to “people’s pools.” It is situated in the Icelandic highlands, at the foot of the rainbow-colored mountains and the Laugahraun lava field. This location marks the northern endpoint of the famous Laugavegur trek, which leads from Landmannalaugar to Thórsmörk (Þórsmörk). In the local thermal pond, where the water mixes with an icy stream, you can easily find a spot where the water temperature mixes perfectly just for you! Overnight stays are possible in a nearby campsite, but don’t look for hotels or luxury accommodations here—it’s all about nature in its purest form, and it’s absolutely worth it.

The area offers many possibilities for both short and long treks of varying difficulty, so there truly is something for everyone. You can wander through the Laugahraun lava field, climb to the tops of Bláhnjúkur or Brennisteinsalda hills, head to the Ljótipollur crater lake, and of course, you can combine all of these activities. After a challenging day, you can relax in a geothermal river.

There are three main driving routes to Landmannalaugar:

  1. F26 – F208 from the northwest. This is the easiest and probably the most common route here. In this option, you can reach the area without needing to ford any rivers. Just before Landmannalaugar, there are two fords, but if you prefer not to cross these rivers by car, you can park your vehicle at a parking lot before the ford, which is just a few hundred meters from Landmannalaugar, and cross the river on foot via a wooden bridge. Along the way, do not miss the “Valley of Tears” – Sigöldugljúfur.
  2. The second route from the west is via road F225. It’s in fairly good condition, but you will need to cross a few smaller rivers, so a 4WD vehicle and some driving experience are necessary.
  3. The third option is from the east via road F208, where you’ll cross a significant number of rivers, approximately 15 in total.
  4. Bonus tip: the fourth way to reach Landmannalaugar is by trekking the Laugavegur trail from the Þórsmörk area.

Safe travels!
