Hafragilsfoss is an 85-meter wide and 27-meter high waterfall on the glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It is the least known and least visited of the trio Selfoss – Dettifoss – Hafragilsfoss.

It is located about 2 kilometers downstream from Dettifoss. You can easily reach the beautiful (eastern) viewpoint of the waterfall by car. The western viewpoint is a bit difficult to reach.

If you want to see Hafragilsfoss up close, you must head down into the canyon of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river. The journey is long and has its pitfalls. From the north, just before the waterfall, there is a very dangerous section where you face a path about 80 cm wide with a 15-meter sheer drop on your right. From the south, you have to climb down an almost vertical cliff for about 15 meters. There is a rope, but this experience is definitely not for everyone; in any case, you will need both hands here. And then, a view that very few people ever experience awaits you. Enjoy it.
