Hvalárfoss

Hvalárfoss is one of those beautiful and pristine waterfalls in Iceland that only a few dozen tourists visit each year. It is located on the Hvalá River just a few hundred meters before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. At the site of the waterfall, the river splits, and in some places, Hvalárfoss forms cascades 50 meters wide. Above the waterfall, there is a wooden bridge, allowing you to easily admire the waterfall from both banks of the Hvalá River.

You can find the waterfall in the eastern part of the Strandir area in the Westfjords, at the very end of road F649. The last ford, which is about 3 kilometers before the waterfall across the Húsá River, can be stressful for some due to its proximity to the ocean. The water level in the river depends on the tide, with a depth of about 20 cm at low tide and up to 50 cm at high tide.

North of Hvalárfoss lies only wilderness, and if you have an adventurous spirit and a lot of experience, it is up to you how far you go.
