Egilsstaðir, with its 2,300 inhabitants, is the largest town in East Iceland and serves as a crossroads in the region due to its location. Its strategic position makes it an excellent base for shorter day trips in the surrounding area, especially to various eastern fjords.

For instance, Seydisfjörður is a popular stop even for those not continuing by ferry. You can explore the mysterious Mjóifjörður or go see puffins in Borgarfjörður eystri.

In Egilsstaðir, you can also shop at the popular supermarket Bónus, or at Nettó conveniently located right next door.
