Esja is a 914-meter-high mountain massif that captures the eyes and feet of everyone who sees it from a distance. It is no surprise that it is the most popular recreational area around Reykjavik. Climbing to the summit is quite a challenge, as you start almost from sea level, facing an elevation gain of nearly 1000 meters. The path to the well-known Steinn viewpoint is well-maintained and easily walkable. Beyond Steinn, there is a steep and moderately difficult section where you pass over the rock block Þverfellshorn, with chains and spikes in a few places, but with agility and caution, the section is manageable. Afterward, there are only 3 kilometers of walking over nearly flat terrain to the highest point of the Esja massif – Hábunga. The views from the top are truly amazing, and apart from Reykjavik and its surroundings, you can see the town of Akranes, the mountain Háinhnúkur, and the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Esja is well-visible from Reykjavik, creating beautiful panoramas from all views along the northern coast, from the famous Sólfarið sculpture, or the beautiful Harpa building.
