One of the most modern and nicest campsites in Iceland is undoubtedly the campsite in Grindavík. Everything is new (the cabins are so new they are not even finished yet), there are hot showers without extra charges, a pleasant airy environment, an ocean view, a nearby swimming pool, and for shopping, there is the Nettó supermarket. And just over the Þorbjörn hill (which is, of course, volcanic) is the famous Blue Lagoon.
Due to its proximity to the airport, many people end their Icelandic journey here and leave behind various supplies for other travelers, including food, gas canisters, and sometimes even sleeping bags, sleeping mats, charcoal, and I’ve even seen a tent, binoculars, or a large knife (which would be difficult to travel with in hand luggage).
If you are starting your Icelandic trip at this campsite, enjoy it and accept that you might not find a nicer and better-equipped campsite elsewhere. C’est la vie…
This campsite has one drawback you should be aware of. The communal area, kitchen, and showers are locked and inaccessible at night (from 10 PM to 8 AM). So, if you arrive or return from a day trip after 10 PM, you won’t be able to shower or cook.
You can find the campsite in the eastern part of Grindavík along road number 427, near the swimming stadium.
