Kolugljúfur, though smaller in size, is nonetheless a stunning canyon where you can experience the raw and, in its own way, dangerous beauty of Icelandic nature. The steep banks, lightly covered in grass, drop sharply down to the river. The waterfalls are named Kolufossar.
Kolugljúfur was formed by the Víðidalsá river and is named after the giantess Kola.
You can find Kolugljúfur Canyon in the northwest of Iceland, about 5 km from Route 1. Take Route 715 and continue on the winding local road called Hrappsstaðavegur. Cross the bridge, and you’ll arrive at the canyon.
