The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is sometimes nicknamed “Mini Iceland,” and for good reason – almost everything Iceland has to offer can be found here in some form. If you have limited time but want to see and experience a lot, this trip may be perfect for you. However, if you choose this route, prepare for a very long and demanding day.

Without question, the most iconic place is the mountain Kirkjufell, especially when viewed from the waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss. Other highlights include the black church Búðakirkja, the seal beach Ytri-Tunga, and of course the glacier Snæfellsjökull, although on a one-day trip you will only drive around it, as there is no time for more.

A popular stop is Arnarstapi, where you will find several attractions that draw visitors here – especially the natural stone bridge Miðgjá and the rock formation Gatklettur, which resembles a strange cross between an elephant and an anteater. For geology enthusiasts, a stop at Gerðuberg is essential – it is the largest basalt wall in Iceland. The cliffs Lóndrangar are also very popular and can be admired almost directly from the parking area.

On the northern side of the peninsula there are two more interesting places – the lava field Berserkjahraun, which you can drive through along road 558, and especially the colorful mountain Drápuhlíðarfjall, although you certainly will not have enough time to climb it during a one-day trip. Along the connecting road between the north and south of the peninsula you will also find the waterfall Selvallafoss.

For relaxation, there are also two geothermal pools: Landbrotalaug and the harder-to-find Sturlungalaug. As you can see, there is truly a lot to discover here.
