Kubbi
Kubbi is a magnificent mountain, or rather a mountain spur, that forms a prominent part of the entire landscape structure of the Skutulsfjörður fjord area and the town of Ísafjörður. It consists of a kind of plateau more than a kilometer long, at an elevation of 400 meters below the highest peak in the area, called Háafell.
From Kubbi, there are absolutely beautiful views of the whole surrounding landscape from an unusual angle. You will see the Tungudalur valley with the Bunáfoss waterfall, the local airport, the popular viewpoint that looks as if it were carved into the opposite rock face, called Naustahvilft, though you will probably know it better under the name Troll Chair, and of course the Skutulsfjörður fjord, as well as the more distant parent fjord Ísafjarðardjúp, beyond it the Strandir region, and the largest town in the area, Ísafjörður.
The route up the mountain is not extremely demanding, but the trip up and back will definitely take you 4–5 hours, and it is also tricky to plan. If you want to head up here, I recommend thorough preparation by scouting the area on site, because there is no marked or well-trodden trail (the trodden paths here were made by sheep, and those can be quite treacherous), and the two routes on digital platforms are completely wrong. One follows a track that was built during the construction of the avalanche barriers and no longer exists at all; moreover, it led only halfway up the slope. The other leads to places that are downright life-threatening, and it was probably made by someone from memory some time afterward.
So good luck if you decide to head up here.
