A 6-meter-tall statue of the mythical figure Bárður Snæfellsás adorns the town of Arnarstapi. According to the Icelandic saga, Bárður was half-human and half-giant. He was the son of King Dumbur (half-titan and half-giant) and a beautiful human woman named Mjöll. His grandfather was Bárður the Titan (Bárður Risi). Due to conflicts with other titans, Dumbur moved to Norway, where his son was raised by the giant Dofri. Bárður learned sports and magic and at the age of 13 married Dofri’s daughter Flaumgerður. They had three daughters. After her death, he married Herþrúður, with whom he had another six daughters. In the 9th century, he came to Iceland and gave the Snæfellsnes Peninsula its name.
