Hafrahvammagljúfur

If you have your heart in your chest then be careful because Hafrahvammagljúfur will tear it apart. It is so mind blowing and jaw dropping ! Can you imagine a canyon which is 8 kilometers long and 200 meters (600 ft) deep?

And if you are left without air in your lungs from this dry land and need some relaxation for your body and your mind, one of Icelands’ most beautiful natural geothermal pools – Laugarvellir is not far away.

How to find get to Hafrahvammagljúfur:

The Hafrahvammagljúfur canyon originates just down from the Kárahnjúkavirkjun Dam. But to have the best views and impressions, I´d advise you to go a bit deeper into the nature via road F910 where you can park (GPS: 64.979526, -15.756883). From there on, it is just a few hundred meters/yards to the canyon. If you travel by car not suited to F-roads or you are here sooner than the F910 is even opened, then you can park where the road 910 turns into F910 and go further by foot. It takes about 2 hours to get there. You will be rewarded by amazing views just for yourself.
