One-day itinerary – Golden Circle
Þingvellir, Strokkur and Gullfoss – the most classic day trip from Reykjavík
Main attractions
Þingvellir · Strokkur · Gullfoss
Other attractions
The Golden Circle is a brilliant marketing name for a sightseeing route whose main attractions are the national park Þingvellir, the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss, and perhaps most famously the geyser Strokkur. In Þingvellir National Park, the best-known sites are Silfra, a fissure between tectonic plates filled with the crystal-clear water of Lake Þingvallavatn, and the waterfall Öxarárfoss. Expect to spend at least two hours at each of these major attractions.
If these natural wonders are not enough for your entire day, there are several other beautiful places located almost directly along the route. These include the waterfall Brúarfoss, the waterfall Faxi, the 6,000-year-old crater Kerið, and the fascinating rock formations on the Hvítá River known as Brúarhlöð. With only a small detour and about a 300-meter walk from the parking lot, you can also visit the waterfall Þórufoss, famous from the television series Game of Thrones.
