Drangey is an island in the Skagafjörður bay. If you are not a local, you can reach Drangey from Sauðárkrókur on one of the excursion boats. Drangey is primarily a nesting site for a large number of seabirds, including puffins, with tens of thousands of pairs nesting there. Ravens and falcons also live on the island.
The island is accessible from only one place where there is a dock, from which steps carved into the slope lead upward. About halfway up, a portion of the path runs close to a cliff, which can be stressful for some people. In our group of 15 people, there were two who were scared and ultimately did not go all the way up. The final section features an installed metal ladder.
Drangey was for many years a refuge for one of Iceland’s most famous outlaws, and he was none other than Gretti the Strong.
