Viðey is an island in the Kollafjørður fjord in the Reykjavík area. According to archaeological findings, it was inhabited as early as the 10th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Viðey was home to a bustling fishing village, but the great economic depression put an end to it, and the island has been uninhabited since the 1940s.
The island is a popular destination for families with children. Although Reykjavík is not a particularly noisy metropolis, the silence on the island is almost deafening! Among its attractions is the white Imagine Peace Tower designed by Yoko Ono, which beams blue light from October 9th to December 8th.
The house on Viðey island is one of the oldest stone buildings in Iceland.
You can reach Viðey island from the dedicated ‘Viðey ferry terminal’ (GPS: 64.156191, -21.867271).
