If you have a heart, Hafrahvammagljúfur Canyon will tear it apart with ease. Starting behind the Kárahnjúkavirkjun Dam, its 8 kilometers in length and 200 meters in depth make it truly impressive.
If the harsh landscape becomes overwhelming and you want to rest your body and mind, one of Iceland’s most beautiful hot springs, Laugarvallalaug, is not far from here.
Hafrahvammagljúfur Canyon begins right behind the Kárahnjúkavirkjun Dam, from where you can already see it. However, you’ll enjoy the canyon more if you continue further inland along the F910 road and park at the parking lot (GPS: 64.979526, -15.756883). If you don’t have a vehicle suitable for traveling on F-Roads or if you arrive before the F910 road is open, you can walk from where Road 910 turns into F910, which takes about two hours. The reward will be breathtaking views that you’ll have all to yourself.
