Tjarnargígur is one of the craters in the Lakagígar crater complex. It is one of the three craters filled with water, and among them, Tjarnargígur is the most easily accessible.
You can find Tjarnargígur in the Icelandic highlands along the F207 road, which branches off from the F206 road leading to Mount Laki. To get there and back, you’ll need to ford rivers, so it’s essential to have a suitable vehicle.
There is a parking area near the crater, from which it’s only about a 5-minute walk to Tjarnargígur. You can either return the same way or take a roughly 45-minute circular walk through the lava field around the craters.
