Eldfell

Eldfell (Hill of Fire or the Fire mountain) is a volcanic cone created by the surprising eruption on January 12, 1973.

The eruption and the newborn lava field made the Heimaey Island 2.4 square kilometers larger than it used to be before the eruption!

To learn more about the Eldfell eruption, do not hesitate to visit a really good museum and exhibition in The Eldheimar Museum.

Actually, for most inhabitants and many Icelanders, the eruption was a life changing event.
