Fossabrekkur – Ragnárbotnar

Fossabrekkur, officially known as Ragnárbotnar, are rapids-like waterfalls on the Ytri-Rangá River in the southern region of Iceland. These waterfalls give the landscape a very vibrant character, with plenty of greenery growing around the water, allowing the otherwise quite inhospitable landscape to thrive with life. The landscape is also characterized by the Hekla volcano, located 10 kilometers away. Its geothermal activity affects the area, and there may be times when there is less water than usual.

You can find the waterfalls near Road 26, about 6 kilometers north of the more famous waterfall Þjófafoss and 2 kilometers south of the intersection with Road F225, which leads into the interior. A short path leads from the road to a quite spacious parking area at its end.

If you head upstream from here along the Ytri-Rangá River, you will reach its source in just under two kilometers.
