Lake Mývatn is located in the northeastern part of Iceland. Both the lake and its surroundings form an amazing geological area that was created around 2300 years ago. There are so many points of interest here that you could easily spend a week just around the lake without getting bored.
Grótagjá and Stóragjá caves, the Krafla area, Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters, Hverfjall crater, Dimmuborgir lava field, Hverir geothermal area, Námafjall peak, and Vindbelgjarfjall mountain are just a few of the natural attractions in the immediate vicinity of Lake Mývatn.
Mývatn means “lake of midges,” and indeed, these annoying insects are ubiquitous here in the summer. A face net or insect repellent is highly recommended.
