Kverkjökull

Kverkjökull is a glacier tongue in the northern part of the Vatnajökull glacier. On the way to the Kverkjökull glacier, you will find a board with a date, which allows you to observe the melting of the glacier year by year. An interesting fact is that at the time the first people lived in Iceland, one could cross from here to the southern coast, as the Vatnajökull glacier was actually two smaller glaciers at that time. Under the glacier, there is an active volcanic area; the last eruption in the area was in 2014, and in one spot, geothermal heat creates a glacier cave with a warm stream flowing out of it. However, do not enter the cave under any circumstances, as the heat makes the ice completely unstable, and the cave could collapse at any moment. You can reach the Kverkjökull glacier via the F902 road, Kverkfjallaleið.
