Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón, known as the Glacial Lagoon, is undoubtedly the ultimate destination for Icelandic tourism. It is often said that anyone who hasn’t visited Jökulsárlón hasn’t truly been to Iceland. The lake, covering an area of 14 square kilometers (and still expanding), is filled with massive icebergs breaking off from the glacier. The river Jokulsá, which flows from the lake to the nearby ocean just a few dozen meters away, carries not only water but also icebergs, some of which you can later see on Diamond Beach. Many species of birds perch on the icebergs, using them as ‘solid ground’, while seals hunt for their fish prey in the icy lake waters.

You can explore the icebergs by boat, either on motorized boats or, for the more adventurous, on paddleboards.

If admiring the glacial lake from the shore isn’t enough and you’d like a closer look at the icebergs or glacier, you have the option of taking a ride on boats, surfboards, or amphibious vehicles.

At the local information center, you can learn more about the area, grab a bite to eat, and connect to the internet.

One of the June nights features a traditional fireworks display in support of Icelandic rescue teams.

Please note that the lake is part of Vatnajökull National Park!

The glacial lagoon is located right off Route 1 – Ring Road. If you travel along this road, you can’t miss it. There is a large parking lot available for visitors.
