The Herdísarvík Bay area was once a bustling settlement, later inhabited by the poet Einar Benediktsson, and is now completely deserted.
The land is owned by the University of Iceland, to which it was donated by Einar Benediktsson himself. The area has been declared a nature reserve, reflecting its ecological and historical significance. Although it is currently uninhabited, remnants of the past, including fish drying sheds and walls, are still present and in relatively good condition.
Herdísarvík is located on the southern shore of the Reykjanes Peninsula.
