Svartifoss may not be large or powerful, but it remains one of the most fascinating waterfalls in Iceland. Located in the heart of Skaftafell National Park, among many other treasures, Svartifoss stands out. Despite the fact that the Stórilækur river only falls 20 meters—a modest height in a country known for waterfalls often exceeding 100 meters—it is the surroundings that truly captivate. The hexagonal basalt columns, resembling organ pipes, lend the site its unique charm and draw crowds of tourists. Its design might also remind you of Aldeyjarfoss waterfall.
The ideal way to visit Svartifoss is by hiking from the Skaftafell National Park parking lot. The trail is moderately challenging, well-maintained, and clearly marked, taking about an hour.
