Nýidalur means New Valley, named so because due to its difficult accessibility, it was discovered only recently and its name is also carried by a nearby mountain hut. Sometimes it is stated that Nýidalur is the same valley as Jökuldalur, but in some maps, Nýdalur is marked as the entrance part to this valley. The river that flows through the valley is called Fjórðungakvísl.
