Nýidalur means New Valley, named so because it was discovered only recently due to its difficult accessibility, and the name is also carried by a mountain hut nearby. It is sometimes stated that Nýidalur is the same valley as Jökuldalur, but on some maps, Nýidalur is marked as the entrance part to this valley. The river that flows through the valley is called Fjórðungakvísl.
