Grafarkirkja

Grafarkirkja is the oldest church in Iceland. It is part of a complex of historically significant buildings in Gröf in Höfðaströnd, located in the northern part of the country. The church is renowned for its unique architectural style, reflecting traditional Icelandic turf construction, and plays an important role in preserving Iceland’s historical and cultural heritage.

This turf church is one of the few remaining examples of its kind in Iceland, which was once dotted with similar structures. The main part of Grafarkirkja is built from stone and turf, providing excellent insulation against Iceland’s harsh weather. These churches are significant not only for their architectural and historical value but also for their connection to the Icelandic way of life in earlier centuries when they seamlessly blended with the natural landscape.
