Kvernufoss, also known as Kvarnarhólsárfoss, is a lesser-known Icelandic waterfall on the Kverna River. It cascades down from a height of 40 meters and is located in a beautiful gorge, just a 10-minute walk from the nearest parking lot. Although Kvernufoss is not among Iceland’s top attractions and is overshadowed by the fame of the nearby Skógafoss waterfall, it should not be overlooked. Unlike Skógafoss, which is constantly crowded with thousands of visitors, you can often enjoy unexpected solitude at Kvernufoss. Additionally, similar to Seljalandsfoss, you can walk behind the waterfall here and enjoy fascinating views.
The easiest way to reach Kvernufoss is to park in front of the Skógar Museum (GPS: 63.525908, -19.493110) and then follow the trail that continues from there. When you reach the river, head upstream, and in less than five minutes, you’ll be at the waterfall. The path is very easy, even for small children.
