Askja is an active volcanic complex in the central highlands of Iceland, located in the Dyngjufjöll mountains. It consists of several calderas, the largest of which contains Lake Öskjuvatn, the second deepest in Iceland. In 1875, there was a massive eruption here that covered a large part of the country with ash. The last eruption occurred in 1961. Askja is situated in a remote area accessible only in summer, and its lunar landscape was used by NASA for training Apollo program astronauts. Here you will find the 217-meter-deep Öskjuvatn Lake and the Víti crater, which contains geothermal water.
