Vonarskarð is a fascinating pass in the Icelandic interior. It earned its nickname, the Pass of Hope, during the time of the first settlements, around the year 900. The pass lies between the glaciers Tungnafellsjökull and Vatnajökull, in an area where the watershed of the north and south divides, along with a high-temperature geothermal field. Vonarskarð is a frequent destination for those who stop at the local campsite Nýidalur, traversing the Mjóhals ridge.
