If you are here, you are in a 50-kilometer long and up to 600-meter wide crater. In other words, Eldgjá is the largest volcanic crater in the world. It is a place that is still alive (beware of falling rocks) and where you will find perhaps the most beautiful waterfall in the Icelandic interior, Ófærufoss.
You can find the Eldgjá crater 65 kilometers northwest of the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur via the F208 road, and on the way here, you will need to cross about 5 fords. There is a parking lot with restrooms where you can park and set off to explore the local beauty, either to the Ófærufoss waterfall or along several marked trails to the edge of the crater.
