Ljótipollur translates to “Ugly Puddle,” but don’t let the name fool you. Ljótipollur is definitely a beautiful crater lake that is well worth a visit. Its name likely originated as a way for locals to deter people from visiting. However, if you do make your way here, you won’t regret it.
There is a road leading to Ljótipollur that is sometimes closed. If that happens, just leave your car at the closure and continue on foot. Alternatively, you can hike directly from Landmannalaugar, which takes about 4-5 hours.
