Írskrabrunnur (Irish Well) is an ancient well likely dating back to the 9th century. Its name remains a mystery. The well was rediscovered in 1989 after being long hidden under sand. Today, it is protected, but visitors can go down to look at it. An interesting feature is the whale bone above the staircase. It is considered a hidden gem of Iceland’s cultural heritage. The surroundings of the well offer stunning scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors usually spend about 30 minutes here, with the site serving as a reminder of Icelanders’ history and resilience.
You can find Írskrabrunnur about 4 kilometers west of Hellissandur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, just a few meters from a small local parking area.
