Gilsárfoss is an absolutely beautiful and very interesting waterfall about 12 meters high on the Gilsá river in the Fáskrúðsfjörður fjord area. Behind the waterfall, there is a small cave you can enter, and the stream of water splits over the rock, creating a smaller waterfall that seems to flow against the river’s current right into the cave. It is a lovely place, and with a bit of caution, children will be thrilled here.
The waterfall is not visible directly from road 955. However, there is a place to park, and you can reach Gilsárfoss in about 15 minutes. The path is easy. Even though the local path continues further, it is better to walk, especially after rain, when the terrain is soft and slippery.
If there are any hidden treasures in Iceland, then Gilsárfoss is definitely one of them.
