Vonarskarð is a fascinating pass in the Icelandic interior. It earned its nickname, the Pass of Hope, as far back as the time of the first settlements, around the year 900. The pass lies between the glaciers Tungnafellsjökull and Vatnajökull, and in this area, there is a watershed between the north and the south as well as a geothermal field with high temperatures. Vonarskarð, over the Mjóhals ridge, is a frequent excursion destination for those who stop at the local Nýidalur campsite.
