Kverkjökull

Kverkjökull is a glacier tongue in the northern part of the Vatnajökull glacier. On the way to the Kverkjökull glacier, you will find a sign with a year on it, which allows you to observe the melting of the glacier year by year. Interestingly, when the first people inhabited Iceland, it was possible to cross from here to the southern coast, as the Vatnajökull glacier was actually two smaller glaciers at the time. Beneath the glacier is an active volcanic area, with the last eruption occurring in 2014, and in one spot, geothermal heat forms a glacier cave and a warm stream flowing out of it. However, do not enter the cave under any circumstances, as due to the heat, the ice is extremely unstable and the cave could collapse at any moment. You can reach the Kverkjökull glacier via the F902 road, known as Kverkfjallaleið.
